The Guardians of the Galaxy Return to Marvel Comics

Marvel announced a new Guardians of the Galaxy series at New York Comic Con while also teasing the potential death of one the team's core members.

Announced during Marvel Comics' "Next Big Thing" panel at New York Comic Con (NYCC) on Oct. 8, the publisher will be putting out a new Guardians of the Galaxy series in the spring of 2023. The publisher released a teaser image for the series showing a broken shield made out of wood with the Guardians of the Galaxy logo. When the image was shown at NYCC, the panel pointed out how Groot is made of wood and teased an omnious future for the hero. Hanging below the image are the caption "How do you rebuild a family?"

The Guardians of the Galaxy were last seen together in 2021's Guardians of the Galaxy #18 by Al Ewing and Juan Frigeri. Following the defeat of Dormammu, Ewing's series ended with the team -- which includes Nova, Star-Lord, Rocket, Gamora, Drax, Groot, Mantis and more -- gettting to relax and head out on vacation together around Arakko.

While taking place outside of ongoing Marvel continuity, the publisher is also putting out a Guardians of the Guardian title this fall. Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is a new one-shot from writer Kevin Shinick, artist Gerardo Sandoval and cover artist Paco Medina. Releasing on Nov. 2, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is a comic tie-in for the ride of the same name which opened at Walt Disney World's Epcot in May 2022. The synopsis for the issue reads, "The Worldmind is collecting data for the new Xandar pavilion on Terra and who knows Earth better than Peter Quill? (Probably…a lot of people…but definitely not the other Guardians!) What Star-Lord doesn’t know, is that a Celestial has been watching and waiting for the Guardians of the Galaxy to be distracted to begin his plan to wipe humanity from existence."

The Guardians of the Galaxy's live-action presence is also about to expand in the coming year. The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special comes to Disney+ in December 2022. Directed by James Gunn, the special takes place after the events of Thor: Love and Thunder and serves as an "epilogue" for the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Phase 4 timeline. Following the special, Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 3 will release on May 5, 2023. Also directed by Gunn, the film will mark the filmmaker's final directorial contribution to the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.

Marvel's new Guardians of the Galaxy series launches in 2023.
